American's Roman Catholic bishops have rejected the reforms on sexuality proposed by grass roots Catholics at the recent Bishop's Conference in Detroit. The bishops' meeting in Washington accepted a pastoral letter which says that "genital sexual behavior is oriented toward marriage and must be heterosexual." The letter qualifies that homosexuals should not be condemned as persons and that they should not suffer prejudice against their basic human rights. The bishops continue to reject birth control by artificial means and sex outside of marriage as well as, of course, abortion. Many
speculate the enactment of the document will create further controversy and widen the gap between reform-seeking lay people and church authorities....
The Body Politic reports that The Code Review Committee of the Ontario Human Rights Commission recently concluded a series of public hearing on whether to add "sexual orientation" to race, sex and other categories in the code. He suggested the phrase "sexual orientation" is to vague and might later be interpreted to include bestiality.
This appears to be the first time "sexual orientation" was not routinely considered as the proposed protecting term for gays in affirmative action policies. The question, however, is whether the word "homosexual" is enough. What do you think? Write High Gear, P.O. Box 6177, Cleveland, Ohio 44101.

PRISONERS
In the past year I have become of the personal, very aware moral and financial needs of our gay brothers and sisters in penal institutions.
To say the least, because of their homosexuality, they suffer an added hardship while serving a prison term. Out of fear of being exposed as homosexuals, oftentimes they alienate themselves from their fellow inmates. This brings forth the need and desire to receive correspondence from the outside world.
Their loneliness is an added punishment and could be somewhat eliminated if we the gay public would take the time and exercise our legal right and moral obligation to just write them a friendly word.
Personally, I correspond with several gay and straight prisoners and would add that I receive a great personal satisfaction and
have
established a warm and sincere friendship with several of these people.
Prisoners are paying their debt to society. We can help them benefit in their present. situation by supporting them, if in no other way than contributing much wanted correspondence and much needed assistance in small financial ways.
It is my understanding that most of our friends at times can.not even afford postage stamps and stationery due to lack of any significant financial income.
At times we can be of further assistance by sending them small gifts of such things as instant coffee unopened, cigarettes, soap, socks, and of course cash to purchase a few more personal needs.
I'd also like to commend the staff of High Gear for their devoted efforts on behalf of our friends in U.S. and state correctional facilities.
In the event any person or persons would like to join our endeavor to help, please do so by answering prisoners ads in High Gear or write to me and I will furnish the necessary information.
Also, if anyone would choose not to become directly involved and would care to send contributions of any needs mentioned to me, I will be happy to forward them directly to our friends in prison.
Trusting that in some way, we can all help one another live a more enjoyable life, I remain, yours in brotherly love,
Rev. R.L. Burnside of Universal Life Church P.O. Box 343 Fletcher, Ohio 45326
